And I’m thinking about the movie 10 Things I Hate About You.
At the end, Patrick and Kat kiss and make up, and she gets to go to Sarah Lawrence, and all is right with the world.
But what they don’t tell you, is what inevitably happens after.
So I will.
Patrick follows Kat to the East coast, where they get a small apartment together. She attends classes during the day, while he works, and they live a fairly content life together for a short period of time.
But then, Kat starts to spend more time with her new college friends. She starts to want to go out at night. But Patrick wants to stay in, he has work early in the morning.
She tries to tell him all about her classes and things she has learned, and he tries to listen, but these things just don’t interest him.
He becomes resentful of the fact that she lives a relatively carefree lifestyle, while he spends his days in the working world. She becomes embarrassed by lack of interest in worldly things, and feels as though he is preventing her from having the full college experience.
They grow apart.
Eventually, Kat meets a boy on campus. He is smart and worldly and fits in nicely with the friends she has acquired.
Patrick is pushed to the side. He has crossed the country for the woman he loves, and she has abandoned him. Unable to afford the move back home, he remains on the East Coast for the remainder of his life, develops an alcohol dependency, and dies alone.
